WHICH SEAT TYPE SHOULD I USE?
WHICH DIRECTION SHOULD THEY FACE?

  Infants Toddler Young Children
Weight Birth to 1 year AND at least 20-22 lbs* *Keep rear-facing as long as possible: read seat labeling for maximum weight limit rear-facing (some up to 35 lb) Over 1 year AND Over 20 lbs, up to 40 lbs. Over 40 lbs. Usually ages 4-8, unless already 4'9'' tall

Always make sure

Children under one year AND under 20 lbs* in rear-facing seats

Harness straps at or below shoulder level

Always read the car seat instructions, and your car's owners' manual.
Children over age one AND over 20 lbs can be forward-facing

Harness straps should be at or above shoulders

Most seats require harnesses be routed through top shoulder slots for forward-facing use

Always read the car seat instructions, and your car's owners' manual.
Belt positioning booster seats must be used with both lap and shoulder belts.

Make sure the lap belt fits low and tight across the lap/upper thigh area (pelvic bone) to avoid abdominal injuries; and the shoulder belt fits snug crossing the chest and shoulder (not the neck). Always read the car seat instructions, and your car's owners' manual.
