Nevada Rider Motorcycle Safety Program
NRS 486.378.1 requires the
Motorcycle Safety Program to submit a report to the Governor and Legislative
Counsel Bureau no later than January 1 of each odd numbered year. This is the
executive summary of that report.
MOTORCYCLE SAFETY COURSES
OFFERED STATEWIDE
In the years 2007 and 2008,
there were a total of 1,178 rider courses offered in the state. The courses
were:

1,053 Beginning Rider Courses
ü
117 Experienced Rider Courses
ü
3 Sidecar/Trike Courses
ü
5 New Instructor Courses
Rider courses were offered
by the three community colleges and directly through the Department of Public
Safety. Also, private training providers were authorized to conduct training,
with state oversight. The Motorcycle Safety Program provided subsidy to the
colleges for 5,644 beginning and 519 experienced riders.

Truckee Meadows Community College,
with three training sites, trained 954 new riders.
ü
Western Nevada College, with three
training sites, trained 808 new and 62 experienced riders.
ü
College of
Southern Nevada, with four
training sites, trained 3,882 new and 457 experienced riders.
ü
The Department of Public Safety,
with seven rural training sites, trained 830 new and 145 experienced riders.
ü
Private sites, with five training
sites, trained 4,419 new and 297 experienced riders.
INSTRUCTORS
These courses were conducted
by state-licensed instructors. As of 12-01-08, there are 99 certified
instructors in Nevada.
FUNDING
NRS 482.480.4 provides
funding for the program. For every motorcycle registered, the motorcycle
program receives $6 to further rider education and motorists’ awareness. For
fiscal years 2007 and 2008, the program received $743,784.
